Our Schools

East Dallas Community School (EDCS):  a 30-year-old nonprofit school in East Dallas for children nine and younger, from primarily low-income families.  EDCS is supported entirely by private funds from foundations, corporations, community organizations, and individuals.

Lindsley Park Community School (LPCS):  a 9-year-old open-enrollment public charter school in East Dallas that replicates East Dallas Community School’s programs for low-income families with children ages three to nine years old.  LPCS operates using primarily public funds, supplemented by private donations.

 OUR STUDENTS

  • 250 children, ages one to nine and parents of 90 children ages zero to three 
  • 68% Hispanic, 9% African American, 19% Anglo, and 4% other ethnicities
  • 67% from families living at or below poverty level
  • 49% are learning English as a second language

    OUR PROGRAMS

  • Accredited Montessori classroom programs for children ages 12 months through third grade
  • After- and Before-school Care (ABC) Program
  • Reading Programs, which include a comprehensive approach to reading using classroom instruction, library time, and the nationally recognized reading program Reading Recovery
  • Playtimes, group and individual sessions focused on helping children manage emotional and/or behavior problems
  • Parent Education, which includes both on-campus classes and home visits for new moms and dads using the nationally acclaimed Parents as Teachers (PAT) curriculum.

    OUR RESULTS

  • 100% of our public charter school students have passed the high stakes state reading competency tests.
  • According to a ten-year study of standardized test scores (1993-2003), EDCS students' average scores were in the top 36% nationwide in reading and math.
  • In a neighborhood where the high school graduation rate is less than 50%, 94% of our third-grade alumni have graduated from high school; 88% of those have gone on to college.  
  • In 2005, our public charter school was ranked among the top 6% of charter school districts, and among the top 15% of all public school districts in the State of Texas!
  • In 2006 and 2007, we received a Gold Performance acknowledgement from the state for our students' accomplishments in reading.
